Marionette

From spinning vinyl and spooling tape decks as a kid at school socials to commanding empty dance floors worldwide, Marionette has managed to not build a vibrant career rooted in eclectic sounds and a passion for music but he has given it a decent crack. Starting his journey at a young age, he slowly made a name for himself with The Parallel Universe a weekly show on 95BFM, briefly one of New Zealand’s most popular stations, from 1998 to 2005 specialising in experimental electronic music. During this period he was involved with organising a variety festivals and live events with surprising success.

In 2003, Marionette took his skills to the next level after winning a place at the Red Bull DJ Academy in Cape Town, which he only entered out of boredom due to being in intensive care after open heart surgery. Following The Red Bull Academy he toured internationally for six months, sharing stages while usually not talking to some of the world’s most talented DJs & producers.

Upon returning to New Zealand, he was a founding member of the pirate radio station Fleet FM, channeling his creativity into a new platform for underground music. However, after years immersed in electronic beats, he became disillusioned with the genre and shifted his focus to obsessively collecting obscure 60s and 70s psych and prog rock which had been an early love and was also a perfect hobby for consuming cash and not planning for the future.

The global lockdown reignited Marionette’s love for electronic music as he discovered a new wave of innovative producers. It was during this time that he stumbled upon a flyer for Cutters Choice Radio, calling for DJs. Bored and in state of perpetual lockdown intoxication late one night, he reached out via email then promptly forgot. Only to be pleasantly surprised to hear from head recruitment and Cutters Choice OG Country Cockney.

This fruitful connection has since resulted in playing weekly shows for the past three years, usually exploring the outer realms of all things underground electronic breakbeat and bass while still remaining fluid in his genre explorations.

With a rich history of missing the bus and a sideways approach to music, Marionette continues to spend large amounts of his child’s education fund on the latest bitch’n beats, bringing a unique blend of nostalgia and fresh sounds to to anyone who will listen.
